Open Water Diver PDF Print E-mail

Age: Minimum age is 15 (10 for junior divers)
Duration: 2 days are needed to complete the course. If short on time or only wanting to stay on the shallow reefs, the PADI Scuba Diver certification is the perfect option. It is half of the PADI open water course, and even though it only takes 2 days it still earns you a licence to dive a maximum depth of 12m.

Water-skill assessment
You need to be able to swim and feel comfortable in the water to dive. A water skill assessment is required as part of the course requirement. Your instructor will schedule a session in the pool and ask you to float for 10 minutes and also complete a 200m swim (20 lengths of the pool). Don't worry, the swim is not timed swim nor is it a test to assess your technique. The Instructors goal is to assure you have reasonable swimming ability and are safe for diving.

Knowledge development
This portion of the course establishes a base foundation of principles, procedures and important information that divers need. There are five sections, each section is accomplished through independent study using the Open Water manual and PADI course DVD. Simply read each section of the PADI manual and answer the questions in the knowledge review. Included in knowledge development are 4 multiple choice quizzes and a comprehensive final exam.

Confined Training
Before venturing into the big blue, your Instructor will take you into pool and conduct your confined training. You will need to learn the basic skills that divers need (or will need in the unlikely event of a problem). This special training reinforces and supports the knowledge development section and allows you to practice and apply what you have learned from the PADI manual and DVD.

Now you’re ready for the Ocean! Its time to put all the knowledge and training into practice.

Open Water Dives
The four Open Water dives are the integral part of the course and definitely the most fun! The first two dives are to a maximum depth of 12m and the second two dives to 18m.  After completion, you will be a certified PADI Open Water Diver and qualified to dive up to 18m anywhere in the world!

Being a qualified PADI diver has so many great advantages. Instead of wasting time and money on 1-day scuba experiences, you can now dive independently with a buddy, plan and log your dives wherever you go and continue your training with a massive selection of educational courses from PADI.
